Brad Pitt has already admitted that he returned to drinking after being sober for sever years, but RadarOnline has more insight into why that period was so difficult for him.

During a deeply personal interview withEsquire, Pitt spoke about grief, loss, divorce and the loneliness that can follow them. At one point, the conversation turned to the darkest period of his life, when he said that the emotional pain had become so overwhelming that he briefly understood why someone might see suicide as a form of relief.

Pitt was careful to say he never intended to act on those thoughts.

“I was never suicidal in any way,” he explained, describing himself as a “congenital optimist.” But he acknowledged that there was one period when he simply “didn’t see a way out” because the pain was almost too much.

Then he was asked one question that seemed to change the tone of the entire interview.

Pitt’s answer was only two words

Pitt leaned forward, paused and answered:“Family stuff.” Even when the interviewer repeated the phrase, Pitt wouldn’t go further than what he had already said.

“Family stuff,” he said again. “We could leave it at that.”

Pitt’s family life has been complicated for years after he split from Angelina Jolie. Not only was their divorce and custody battle difficult and stretched on for years, Pitt’s relationship with his six children suffered as well.

Radar claims that Pitt’s estrangement from his children has been very painful for him and it may have helped lead to him drinking again. And now that they’re older, some of his children have moved away from using the Pitt surname, which has not been easy for him.

“Brad has been to h— and back in recent years, so it’s really no big surprise that he’s fallen off the wagon,” they said. “He tried his best, and the fact he stayed sober for so long is little short of heroic.”

Radar’s source also spoke about how his relationship with his kids has affected him, saying that “the loss of his kids hit him like a ton of bricks and ripped his morale to shreds.

They continued, “That’s what people in his life are assuming drove him over the edge and back to the bottle – the horrific realization that his relationship with his kids has totally broken down.”

They also spoke about Pitt’s dark thoughts, adding, “The fact that this period coincided with him simultaneously feeling suicidal is just tragic to the folks that know Brad.

“He clearly saw it as a way out of his h—.”

Brad Pitt’s mother died last year

While Pitt did not mention his children at all during the interview, he did confirm is that his darkest emotional period was connected to “family stuff” — and that how his own loss has changed the way he sees pain.

He also spoke about the death of his mother, the loss of friends and his father’s grief. He described loss as the most profound thing a person can go through and said the loneliness that can follow can feel like “the greatest torture.”

“I think grief is probably the most leveling of all emotions,” he said.

“That’s an understatement, even. Loss is certainly the most profound thing a human can endure,” the actor added.

After seven years sober, Pitt said he was “back off the wagon” and had started drinking again, but says he is doing so in a much more controlled way. He said he can have a few drinks but cannot drink heavily and needs to be “professional about it.”

And while he has previously spoken publicly about sobriety, this latest interview offers something different: a rare glimpse at the pain underneath it.
