As Colman Domingo gears up for the premiere of *Michael, *he's addressing the pointed criticism from an important figure — Paris Jackson, the daughter of the film's subject.
Paris has been candidly critical of Antoine Fuqua's upcoming chronicle of Michael Jackson's life and work, and her comments were brought up during Domingo's recent interview with *WSJ Magazine*. "I hope that she eventually loves the tribute that we made about her father," Domingo told the magazine.
In September, Paris called the actor out after he was quoted in PEOPLE saying she had been "very helpful" during the production of *Michael*.
"I read one of the first drafts of the script and gave my notes about what was dishonest [and] didn't sit right with me and when they didn't address it I moved on with my life," Jackson wrote in an Instagram Story. "Not my monkeys, not my circus. God bless and godspeed."

Domingo told *WSJ* that his words to PEOPLE had been "conflated" and "taken out of context," noting that the article has been amended to "more fully" capture what he said. The *Euphoria* star claimed he messaged Jackson on Instagram to explain and she responded by simply putting a heart on the message.

Domingo plays the King of Pop's late, controversial father in *Michael*, making a physical transformation for the film that unnerved even its director. The actor looked so similar to the real-life Joe Jackson, Fuqua told *WSJ *it "scared the s-- out of" him.

The director said that Domingo "melts into the character," and that he encapsulated Joe — "the look and his body language and even the way he spoke."
Domingo said that he believed he had to turn down the "noise" of public opinion to prepare for the complex role of the polarizing patriarch. "For me, it was about finding his humanity," he said. "He created some of the most iconic artists that have ever walked this earth. What goes into the making of that man?"
When pressed about portraying someone whose children say he abused them, Domingo said: "I will say that he chastised his children. It's always going to be arguable what's right and a great method."

Despite Paris' qualms, *Michael* does have the backing of the Jackson estate. In a follow-up to her Instagram Story, she likened her experience to that of families and friends who spoke out about Freddie Mercury and Mötley Crüe's respective depictions in *Bohemian Rhapsody *and *The Dirt*.
"The thing about these biopics is, it's Hollywood. It's fantasyland. It's not real. But it's sold to you as real," she said. "The narrative is being controlled. And there's a lot of inaccuracy and there's a lot of just full-blown lies. At the end of the day, that doesn't really fly with me."
Fuqua (*Training Day*) directed *Michael *from a script by John Logan (*Skyfall*, *Gladiator*). The film opens in theaters April 24.
