Dakota Fanning says Elle Fanning is ‘embarrassed’ about revealing Jack Black crush: ‘This has gotten out of hand’

Elle Fanning publicly declared her crush on Jack Black in multiple interviews.

Her sister, Dakota Fanning, said that the Sentimental Value star believes, “This has gotten out of hand.”

Dakota thinks Elle is “embarrassed” and “nervous that it’s made him uncomfortable.”

Elle Fanning isn’t thrilled with how she left things with Jack Black.

After publicly declaring her love for the Nacho Libre actor in a 2024 interview with The Tonight Show, the Sentimental Value actress feels badly about potentially embarrassing her celebrity crush, according to her sister, Dakota Fanning.

“Elle and I were at the airport in a lounge and this woman who came up who’s like best friends with [Black’s] wife, and Elle was like, ‘I’m so sorry. This has gotten out of hand,’” Dakota said in an interview with Happy Sad Confused. “And she was like, ‘No, we love it.’ She wanted to take a picture. She was like, ‘No, no, no. We love it. We think it’s so funny.’”

Dakota said that Elle feels self-conscious about the situation. “Elle’s gotten embarrassed about it, I think, like she revealed too much of her true feelings about Jack,” the War of the Worlds star said. “She’s nervous that it’s made him uncomfortable. But I don’t think it has.”

Elle publicized her affection for Black in a conversation with Jimmy Fallon in 2024, explaining the context behind a selfie she took with the Kung Fu Panda star at the Golden Globes. “We were waiting for our cars at the valet at the same time, and my boyfriend was with me,” she said. “He was like, ‘Go up to him. Go up to him.’ And he convinced me to, and I did. And then my boyfriend yelled to him, he’s like, ‘You’re her hall pass, by the way!’”

The Margo’s Got Money Troubles actress said the Margot at the Wedding actor “loved” the revelation. “He was with his wife, and, like, we were laughing,” she recalled.

Elle said she and Dakota are in a group chat with friends that is “dedicated to how hot Jack Black is,” adding, “He is our perfect man. Like, beyond. And like we ... send each other like clips of him all the time.”

The actress later doubled down in September 2025 in a Vanity Fair video interview alongside Dakota, referring to Black as the “hottest man I’ve ever seen in my life” and “sex on legs.”

Black responded in December, indicating that he was flattered but confused. “Thank you,” he said in a video shared by Sony Pictures. “I appreciate the compliment, but I have to close my eyes, because I can’t quite process what I’m hearing there. But thank you, Elle. And to the boyfriend dude: We’re cool.”

The Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle shared his hypothesis on what was going on in Elle’s mind. “Have you ever heard of body dysmorphia?” he asked. “Where when you look at yourself, you’re like, ‘Oh, I’m so ugly,’ but really you’re like this gorgeous creature? I think she’s got like the opposite of that, where she looks at me, which objectively is a goblin gremlin, and she sees this gorgeous creature apparently. She’s got that weird goblin dysmorphia.”

Elle discussed Black’s reaction in an interview with Entertainment Weekly’s The Awardist podcast in April. “I keep saying I think he probably has a restraining order against me now. I’m very sorry,” she told host Gerrad Hall. “But if my name is synonymous with Jack Black, it doesn’t get better than that to me.”
