A former employee of an exclusive private club in Oregon drove a vehicle loaded with explosives into the facility early Saturday morning, causing massive damage before dying in the wreckage.
The suspect, identified by investigators as Bruce Whitman, crashed a rented black Nissan Rogue into the ground floor of the Multnomah Athletic Club in downtown Portland at approximately 3 a.m., The Oregonian reported. Whitman previously worked as a bartender at the facility, according to his LinkedIn profile.
One law enforcement source told the outlet that Whitman drove the vehicle through the lobby and past a set of turnstiles before detonating a series of devices, including pipe bombs and propane tanks.
Sgt. Jim DeFrain, head of the Metro Explosive Disposal Unit, told reporters during a Saturday afternoon press conference that some of the devices detonated successfully, while others failed to ignite.
“This is a dirty, dangerous, complex job,” DeFrain said. “I’ve been a bomb technician here in this city for over 13 years. This is by far the most complex scene I have ever done.”

The driver died in the resulting fire, but no club members or staff were injured.
By Saturday afternoon, photos and security camera footage of the wreckage had begun circulating among club members and were shared with The Oregonian. In an email update to members, general manager Charles Leverton said the footage had been shared without the club’s permission.
“While we are still evaluating the full extent, the damage is significant but contained to a portion of the facility,” Leverton wrote. “While much remains unknown and the investigation is ongoing, it is clear that this is a difficult moment for our entire community.”

Law enforcement sources told the newspaper that the ground floor was “completely destroyed,” with damage estimates reaching into the millions of dollars.
The Multnomah Athletic Club, one of the largest private social and athletic clubs in the United States, serves more than 21,000 members. The facility remained closed “until further notice” following the attack.
Police Chief Bob Day said during the press briefing that there were no further threats to the community and that the incident appeared confined to the club. Federal agencies, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, are assisting local authorities in the investigation.
On Saturday night, Portland police executed a search warrant at a North Portland residence associated with Whitman.
A neighbor, Ross Taylor, told The Oregonian that Whitman had previously expressed conspiracy theories regarding the club and appeared to be struggling with mental health issues.
Court filings describe a years-long fixation with the club and a pattern of menacing conduct dating back to 2021. Whitman was twice the subject of “red flag” protection orders, including one issued earlier this year after he reportedly shot himself in the head. Police records state he previously patrolled the city looking for cars with club membership stickers and once threatened to burn the building down.
The club had previously notified members of the situation after Whitman allegedly arrived at the homes of six different members to threaten them. Neighbors also reported his behavior had become increasingly erratic and said he prominently displayed conspiracy theories about club employees on his property.
In 2015, Whitman gained local media attention for a prank involving the release of pink-dyed chickens on the Portland waterfront. Witnesses reported seeing two pink hens near a downtown fountain just a day before the attack.
The car used in the attack remained inside the building late Saturday as technicians continued to clear the site of remaining explosives.
