Dolly Parton classics “Steel Magnolias”, “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” return to theaters

Two of Dolly Parton’s movies are returning to theaters following her death.

The country music star died Tuesday at age 80.

The movies will screen at about 200 AMC locations, among other chains.

It’s finally possible to make another appointment with Steel Magnolias hairdresser Truvy, who was played by the late Dolly Parton.

After the death of the country music star, actress, and philanthropist on Tuesday — following a brief battle with cancer — the 1989 movie is returning to theaters, as is her 1982 crowd-pleaser The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

AMC Theatres will show the movies at about 200 of its locations nationwide, with tickets value-priced as AMC Fan Faves. Exclusively in the state of Tennessee, Regal Cinemas will play the same pair of films, while the smaller chain Harkins Theaters is also screening the movies at select locations on Aug. 29 and 30.

Steel Magnolias is a dramedy, based on a stage play by Robert Harling, about several women in the small town of Natchitoches, La., who have made Truvy’s beauty salon their regular meeting spot. Though many of their conversations are hilarious, they help one another through tragedy in the film’s heartwrenching final act.

Parton costars with an up-and-coming Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, and the late Olympia Dukakis as one of a group of tight-knit, resilient women in the story based on Harling’s own sister.

Roberts was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role at the 1990 Oscars; the award went to the late Brenda Fricker for My Left Foot.

The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, meanwhile, is Parton’s 1982 musical comedy with Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise. She sings multiple songs, including her monster hit, later famously covered by Whitney Houston, “I Will Always Love You.”

It’s “The ultimate downhome musical!” the theater chain boasts. “Y’all come back now, y’hear?!”

In the movie, a local brothel — the Devil’s Playhouse — becomes the target of a TV preacher, forcing the town’s sheriff, who happens to be a frequent customer, to save it.

Parton’s film career also featured movies such as 1980’s 9 to 5, 1984’s Rhinestone, and 1992’s Straight Talk.

Tickets for the retrospective are available now on the AMC, Regal, and Harken websites.
