Collin Gosselin’s upcoming memoir details severe allegations of childhood physical abuse by his mother.
He claims Kate Gosselin zip-tied him and confined him to a basement cell during his early childhood.
Kate denies the claims, stating Collin is a troubled young man with a distorted perception of reality.
Collin Gosselin is breaking a years-long silence to expose the grim reality behind his family’s television empire. The 22-year-old former TLC star will release his memoir, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood, on October 13.
He is bypassing the glossy reality TV narrative to detail what he describes as severe mistreatment. Gosselin says the book will reveal parts of his upbringing that were “deliberately kept hidden”.
The allegations are specific and alarming. Gosselin claims his mother, Kate Gosselin, physically restrained him, alleging she zip-tied him and confined him to a “basement cell”.
He also shared a disturbing memory regarding physical discipline, stating his mother used to pray to stop hitting him.

Gosselin insists his primary motivation is transparency. He stated his intention is to “speak up against abuse, injustice and the exploitation of children” rather than entertain the public.
“This is why using my voice to put these things in the light is so important,” Gosselin wrote.
The book also dives into the fractured dynamics of the famous family. Gosselin recalled a painful encounter with his mother, alleging she told him “that I broke her family, that my siblings want nothing to do with me, all that stuff”.

A major portion of the memoir confronts his forced institutionalization. At age 12, Kate placed Collin in a psychiatric facility, where he remained locked away for roughly 22 months.
Gosselin disputes the medical diagnoses used to justify his confinement. He maintains that his time in the facility was actively detrimental to his mental health.
After he was finally released, his father, Jon Gosselin, was granted sole custody in 2018, and Collin has lived with him ever since.
Kate Gosselin is aggressively pushing back against her son’s grim account. She stated she was “left with no choice” but to publicly respond, dismissing Collin as “a very troubled young man”.
She continues to defend her decision to institutionalize him. Kate insists the move was made entirely on “professional medical advice, for her family’s safety”.
Furthermore, the former reality matriarch claims her son operates with a “distorted perception of reality” resulting from “multiple psychiatric diagnoses”.
Despite her prior attorney stating in 2024 that she would not respond to further allegations, she is now openly battling her son’s narrative in the press.
Gosselin remains resolute as his publication date approaches. The upcoming memoir promises an unvarnished look at the “hardest moments” of surviving a highly publicized and controversial childhood.
