HBO has announced that Girls will return for a five-episode run, with production beginning in 2027
Lena Dunham wrote the new episodes and will return as Hannah, alongside Allison Williams as Marnie, Jemima Kirke as Jessa, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna and Andrew Rannells as Elijah
“It’s rare that you get the chance to return to something that changed your life with the gift of hindsight and a whole new level of gratitude and understanding,” Dunham said in a press release
Girls is coming back.
On Tuesday, Oct. 13, HBO announced that Lena Dunham’s hit series will return for five episodes. She will reprise her role as Hannah, alongside Allison Williams as Marnie, Jemima Kirke as Jessa, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna and Andrew Rannells as Elijah.
“We always said we would only return to Girls if there was a specific story we were burning to tell. I’ve missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn’t quite picture them in the present day,” Dunham, 40, said in a press release. “Then, right around my fortieth birthday, they started talking to me in the shower. And, as you may remember, once this fivesome starts talking, it’s pretty hard to get them to stop.”
“It’s rare that you get the chance to return to something that changed your life with the gift of hindsight and a whole new level of gratitude and understanding. I love these girls (and boy), our friends at HBO, and all the people who have continued to discover the show and remind us afresh why we do this, which is the joy of being together,” she continued. “And the chance to wear yellow mesh…”
Production on the five episodes will begin in 2027, exactly a decade after the series’ conclusion.
In a statement, HBO’s Executive Vice President said they are “thrilled to have Lena turn her gaze from the tumult of one’s twenties to the milestone of turning forty.”

“To say the world has changed since we last saw Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna, Jessa, and Elijah is a massive understatement, but we know fans — old and new — will be happy to see how they’ve grown and relieved to see that they’re still the ‘Girls’ we knew way back when.”

In a video sharing the exciting news, Dunham, Williams, Mamet, Kirke and Rannells all appeared. Dunham popped the question: “I’m just gonna ask: Are you in?”
All three women agreed, and then Rannells appeared. “What are we doing next summer?” he asks, before confirming, “I’m in — but only because you trashcans need constant supervision.”
In a newsletter shared on Tuesday, Dunham said of the five-episode order, “Coming back to these characters now is a gift.”She said that there was a “long period in which it was impossible to imagine reconvening Girls” because “it felt so recent and so big, like a glacier we were sailing away from.” That all changed when she turned 40. “I couldn’t stop thinking about where our Girls would be, and how they’d meet this milestone.”“I thought about the distance I felt — having not yet had a child, having come ‘later’ to marriage, having gone very fast in certain ways and still having some challenges with the washing machine — from the woman I thought I’d be and so many women I know,” she wrote. “Maybe there was once a part of me that wanted to outrun Hannah and her ladies. Seeing the love you’ve so generously shared for it helped to turned me around.”
Girls is now streaming on HBO Max.
