- Yes, the cerulean sweater returns in *The Devil Wears Prada 2* — and the director tells EW it's an exact duplicate of the sweater from the first film.

- David Frankel explains that Anne Hathaway restyled the new version of the sweater by hand.

- There's also a small callback to the 2006 cerulean sweater scene in the first sequence.

**This article contains spoilers for *The Devil Wears Prada 2.***

*The Devil Wears Prada 2* director David Frankel didn't have to fish it out of some clearance bin in a tragic Casual Corner, as a new vision for the grand return of the iconic cerulean sweater was waiting right before his eyes.

Frankel tells ** that Oscar winner Anne Hathaway, who reprises the role of Andy Sachs in the new *Devil Wears Prada* sequel, collaborated with him and costume designer Molly Rogers to make sure the legendary hue had prime representation in the second film.

Before *the* sweater sashays back to *Runway*, Andy sports the color in several scenes, from décor in her apartment to the dress she wears to Elias-Clarke Publications head Irv Ravitz's (Tibor Feldman) birthday party.

"The dress was something Annie fell in love with," Frankel says of the Paco Rabanne design Hathaway insisted on wearing for the scene. He attributes the sweater's return in the film's final scene to a mix of ideas from Rogers and Hathaway.

Rogers "had pulled a copy of the original sweater out of storage somewhere, and she and Annie restyled it," Frankel explains of the scene, which sees Andy cement her place at *Runway* as a full-time editor.

While it was a duplicate of the original cerulean sweater that's spawned several million memes since 2006 (Frankel confirms it's even the same brand), Hathaway wanted to "cut the sleeves off of it to turn it into the vest" the audience sees in the sequel's closing moments.

"It was the understudy for the original sweater," Frankel jokes.

The final scene is bookended by the sequel's opening sequence, which contains a blink-and-you'll-miss-it nod to the cerulean sweater bit. As Andy walks through the streets of New York City on her way to a journalism awards ceremony, she passes through Central Park, breezing past a street vendor selling belts. Just as the merchant holds up two accessories for his customer to choose from — in strikingly similar fashion (pun intended) to the way Jocelyn (Rebecca Mader) held up a pair of belts for Miranda to see in the first movie — Andy notices, winces, and moves on.

"That was something that came up as we were trying to conceive of the opening, just a little wink," Frankel observes.

Frankel says he didn't want to go too overboard with the references, which is why the iconic Chanel boots don't return in the sequel. Still, Andy reveals in a side conversation with *Runway* assistant Amari (Simone Ashley) that she gave them away years ago.

*The Devil Wears Prada 2* is now playing in theaters nationwide.
