ā€œHe’s such a hero of mine; his films have meant arguably the most to me getting into this industry. So yeah, to get to do it with him is great,ā€ he told us on the red carpet.ā€œHe finally answered my letters,ā€ he jokingly added.

And Boyle was just as pleased to have O’Connell back on board.

ā€œWhat an actor!ā€ Boyle said, before explaining that he’d been envious of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple director Nia DaCosta for getting to work with O’Connell throughout the sequel.

ā€œIt was wonderful to offer him this part,ā€ he continued.

Boyle revealed that getting O’Connell involved wasn’t entirely straightforward, as the production was still trying to secure the money needed to make the film.ā€œI didn’t know whether we’d be able to make it. I offered it to him and said we haven’t got the money, which we didn’t have, but please hang around for it because it’s a wonderful part,ā€ he said.

ā€œHe was excellent,ā€ Boyle said, before explaining exactly what makes O’Connell such a compelling actor. ā€œHe’s very interesting because he has enormous charm, very funny when he needs to be – all those kinds of skills he has.ā€

Boyle then referenced O’Connell’s performance in the 28 Years franchise, adding: ā€œWhen you think about the character he played in 28, which was hugely repellent and yet you’re still drawn to him. You’re still fascinated by him, and that’s a rare gift.ā€
