His comment comes amid the release of his memoir Bloodlines, which chronicles his autoimmune disorder as well as the end of their seven-year marriage
Manganiello says discussing the split in the book was necessary to show his physical and mental healing
Joe Manganiello is addressing recent rumors stemming from a social media post.
The actor appeared on CBS Mornings on Monday, Oct. 12, to promote his memoir Bloodlines about his near-fatal autoimmune disorder, when Gayle King asked him about a recent Instagram Story from his ex-wife SofĂa Vergara.
The Modern Familyalum, 54, had reposted a chart to Instagram comparing the behavior of a âgood manâ to a ânarcissistic man.â It was originally shared by her son, Manolo Gonzalez Vergara, 35.
Under the chart were the words, âRemember kids, when dealing with a narcissist, it doesnât matter how much you do for them, because they will resent you for it and nothing will ever be enough, and theyâll always somehow try to paint you as the bad guy.â

Referencing Vergaraâs post, King said to Manganiello: âHer son posted a thing about, âThis is what happens when you deal with a narcissistic man,â and she has liked that post. They appear to be saying that basically, itâs terrible what happened to you but the bottom line is that youâre a narcissist. What do you say to that?â
Manganiello, 49, replied: âWell, I think anybody who said that should read the book first and understand what the book is actually about because itâs not about that. Itâs about the suffering I went through.â

Bloodlines, he said, is about âsurvival and itâs also about hope.â
In the book, Manganiello chronicles the end of his seven-year marriage to Vergara, noting that symptoms of his illness began shortly after the pair wed in 2015. The True Blood alum writes that his illness caused his marriage to âbecome devoid of any emotionality whatsoever.â He claims that Vergara refused to hug him, and made fun of his pet Chihuahua. The couple ended their relationship in 2023.
Vergara had previously said that their marriage ended over a disagreement about children, explaining in 2024, âmy husband was younger; he wanted to have kids and I didnât want to be an old mom ⊠I feel itâs not fair to the baby. I respect whoever does it, but thatâs not for me anymore.â
At the time, Manganiello said children werenât the reason for the split, and in his book he writes that his autoimmune disorder made him decide to not pursue fatherhood.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Manganiello says that writing about his split was ânot the point of the book,â but rather necessary to illustrate his path to eventual healing both physically and mentally. âI tell the truth in the book, even when itâs super painful,â he says. âIt is [also] nuanced, and itâs not something that fits into a sound bite. This book was written because I want people to know who I am, and I had to hide who I was for a very long time.â
