During the June 22 episode of her podcast, Kristin Cavallari realized she likely had an eating disorder in her early 20s

"There's a spectrum [to eating disorders], and I was definitely on some sort of spectrum," she said

Kristin Cavallari is looking back on what was likely an eating disorder in her early 20s.

The Laguna Beach alum, 39, opened up about her health and eating patterns during the June 23 episode of her podcast, Let's Be Honest, and realized on-air that she likely had an eating disorder in retrospect.

"In my early twenties, I never had an eating disorder — but actually, I probably would say this is a form of an eating disorder, where I was obsessed with food," Cavallari said on the June 22 episode of her podcast. "I was obsessed with it."

"I was obsessed with food. I was obsessed with my weight," she continued. "I would guilt myself all day every day, and it was such a horrible way to live."

At the time, Cavallari often deprived herself of foods she enjoyed. She recalled that while she did eat, it was mainly "really bland and basic food" like salads with chicken, she said, because she was "hyper aware" of what she was putting into her body.

But on the weekends, she added, she'd go out drinking, which often led to a bout of binge eating — which was also an unhealthy habit, Cavallari said.

"So I guess that is an eating disorder. I'm not trying to minimize it... This is sort of the first time that I'm like, 'maybe it really was,' " she said.

"I was never starving myself. I was never throwing up. But there's a spectrum, and I was definitely on some sort of spectrum," she continued. "Which, by the way, I think is really common for women, and that's because of our society."

In contrast to that time in her life, Cavallari is now at a point where she feels "real freedom around food," she said, and she wants to help others get there, too. These days, Cavallari prioritizes eating whole foods whenever possible, but she's accepted that her diet will include processed food from time to time.

Cavallari stressed the importance of reading a product's label to discern its quality. As she shared, "I think you can eat everything you want as long as it's really clean and good quality."
