"OutKast", the third episode of Lanterns, is mere hours away from its release on HBO. The preview for the upcoming episode teased a flashback-focused entry revolving exclusively around John Stewart. We are also going to meet a Guardian for the first time in the series in the form of Laura Linney's character. While the preview just teased flashbacks to John Stewart's childhood, fans hope that there is more to this episode.

Last week's episode had an intriguing revelation about Kelly Macdonald's Kerry Kane. This revelation is important because Lanterns might be setting up a long-awaited DCU project. Apart from that, fans are also hoping for a scene set in 2026, after the discovery of Hal Jordan's body.

Thus, expectations are high from the upcoming episodes of the DCU HBO series.

Why is John Stewart special?

The second episode set up something very important: John is special. The new recruit used the ring to construct a bird, which continued to exist even after John handed over the ring to Hal. Eventually, the ring ran out of power, but the bird did not cease to exist even after that. The bird continued to be on John's side, as the Hal's pupil travelled between Rushville and Coast City.

This plotline has many discussing how John managed to keep the bird alive without the ring. DC even released a clip of John's parents informing the young boy that he was destined to be Green Lantern. Thus, it seems that Lanterns is following the recent comics continuity, which introduces the idea that the Guardians personally chose John Stewart.

But there is another wild fan theory; some believe that John Stewart might also be a candidate to be a Guardian as well. This would explain why John was able to keep the bird alive throughout the second episode.

The sneak peek of the third episode also reveals that the Guardians told John's parents that the young boy was chosen to be a Green Lantern. This scene gives context the shocking opening minutes of the first Lanterns episode, which saw John's father train his young son to be fearless in 1996.

The second episode reveals that Kerry Kane was born and raised in Gotham. Moreover, many fans are pointing at her surname "Kane". While casual fans might not see much, those who follow the comics know that the Green Lantern series might have set up the DCU Batman, or even the Bat-Family. That's because Bruce Wayne's mother Martha hails from the Kane family.

Thus, the Rushville Sheriff might be a maternal cousin of Bruce Wayne, given that the DCU Batman is as old as Kerry. Moreover, Kerry Kane might also be setting up the DCU Batwoman/Kate Kane.

What's happening with Hal Jordan in 2026?

The closing minutes of the Lanterns premiere shocked viewers with the reveal that Hal Jordan is mysteriously dead in 2026. The second episode did not return to 2026, and it was entirely set in 2016. But many fans believe that the second episode might have set up a twist, as Hal examines the alien corpses, which did not return to their original form; instead, they maintained their human appearance.

Therefore, many believe that Hal Jordan might not be dead in 2026, as the last scene of the first episode suggested. What we see as Hal Jordan's remains in the first episode might be an alien who took the Green Lantern legend's appearance.
