At least seven new cast members have joined season 3 of House of the Dragon
Those additions include James Norton as Ormund Hightower and Annie Shapero as legendary fighter Alysanne Blackwood
Showrunner Ryan Condal teased that the season will include 19 "point-of-view characters" to capture the massive world of Westeros
Some new faces have arrived in Westeros.
As the Targaryen civil war expands in season 3, so does the series' ensemble. Showrunner Ryan Condal previously said the installment would feature 19 "point-of-view characters," expanding the scope of the story beyond its central players.
"When we say point-of-view it, means a character [who] can have their own scene without another one of the characters in it," he said during a May 2025 episode of the Happy Sad Confusedpodcast. "And we try to be fairly rigid about who are POV characters in the show because it helps keep your arms around it so it doesn't feel like you're all over the field all the time."
Condal continued, "It's exciting, cause it's a lot to service, and it gives you a lot of opportunity to do those recombinations ... It also demonstrates and dramatizes the sprawl and breadth and scope of this epic story that we're telling."
That makes sense considering that several characters are joining the House of the Dragon cast for the HBO fantasy drama's third season, which premieres on June 21. Stars like Emma D'Arcy, Olivia Cooke and Matt Smith will reprise their roles alongside James Norton, Tommy Flanagan, Dan Fogler and other actors who are set to appear in the Game of Thrones franchise for the first time.
Here's everything to know about the characters joining House of the Dragon in season 3 and the actors portraying them.

James Norton as Ormund Hightower

Varietyreported in January 2025 that Norton was cast as Lord of Oldtown Ormund Hightower, who is the cousin of Alicent (Cooke) and Gwayne's (Freddie Fox) and Otto's (Rhys Ifans) nephew. The official description describes his character as "presently leading the Hightower host in a march on King's Landing to support his house against Rhaenyra (D'Arcy)."
Condal likened Ormund to "the Tywin Lannister of this world," referencing Charles Dance's iconic villain from Game of Thrones.
"He's the richest guy who's not sitting on a throne somewhere," the showrunner told SFX in June 2026, per GamesRadar+. "Ormund has the largest standing army left in Westeros and a dragon, so he is going to introduce a big old wrinkle into this."
Because the character is just "a sketch" in George R. R. Martin's books, Condal said they got to create "a really deep, complex and three-dimensional character out of him that introduces a new kind of complication into the world."

The Sons of Anarchyalum cast as Ser Roderick Dustin in March 2025, per Entertainment Weekly. His character, who goes by the ominous nickname "Roddy the Ruin," is the Lord of Barrowton and the head of House Dustin in the north.
In a joint Instagram post announcing his addition to the House of the Dragon cast, Ser Dustin was described as "a fan-favorite character" from Fire & Blood and a "battle-scarred leader of the Winter Wolves."
Those wolves in question are an army of 2,000 "grizzled graybeards in old mail and ragged skins" in Fire & Blood, who Condal told Entertainment Weekly "brought some northern spirit into our southern based tale."

The final major addition to House of the Dragon was announced in July 2025: Annie Shapero as one of Martin's fiercest female fighters, Alysanne Blackwood.
According to Deadline, the Australian-British actor's character, also known as Black Aly, is Lord Benjicot Blackwood's aunt and plays a major role in Fire & Blood. She fights for Queen Rhaenyra and becomes somewhat of a legendary figure among the House Stark lore.
"Black Aly is the kind of person we all wish we could be for about ten minutes a day," Shapero said in an interview with Numéro Netherlands. "She's fiercely loyal, she's capable, and she trusts her own instincts.
The actress added, "There's something really satisfying about watching someone move through the world with that kind of certainty, especially in a world as chaotic as Westeros."
