The actor spent years keeping a diagnosis secret.
A recent red-carpet appearance has put Modern Family star Eric Stonestreet’s weight loss back in the spotlight. But the 55-year-old actor’s transformation involves something far more serious than his changing appearance: a type 2 diabetes diagnosis he once kept secret from nearly everyone around him.
Parade reported that Stonestreet appeared alongside his wife, Lindsay Schweitzer, at an event connected to Dexter: Resurrection. His slimmer appearance renewed interest in a health journey that began in 2009, the same year he landed his breakout role as Cameron Tucker.

The Diagnosis He Hid During ‘Modern Family’

In a revealing 2025 interview with People, Stonestreet admitted he initially struggled to accept his diagnosis.
“I was embarrassed. I didn’t want to tell anybody,” he said.
He kept the condition private from friends, relatives and even Schweitzer for years.
“I would hide my injectables and my pills from her,” he recalled.
The turning point wasn’t Hollywood pressure to lose weight. Stonestreet had watched his father experience painful diabetic neuropathy, a complication involving nerve damage.
“He passed away from leukemia, but the thing that was the most painful for him was his diabetic neuropathy,” Stonestreet explained.
That experience helped convince him to take his condition more seriously.

The Treatment That Changed His Approach
Stonestreet began taking Mounjaro, the prescription diabetes medication containing tirzepatide, in 2022.
“It’s a game changer,” he told People. “It’s changed my lifestyle, changed my approach to eating, changed my approach to exercise.”
The actor said he lost a substantial amount of weight after combining medication with changes to his eating and activity habits. He has not provided a verified total number of pounds lost.
“There’s a pep in my step,” he said, describing improvements in his everyday mobility.
Stonestreet and his mother have also served as spokespeople for Eli Lilly, Mounjaro’s manufacturer, a commercial relationship worth noting when evaluating his endorsement.

Why the Transformation Matters Beyond Weight Loss
Stonestreet’s story illustrates why appearance alone cannot measure metabolic health. Type 2 diabetes can require long-term management even when someone feels relatively well.
