Southern Californians can catch a sight of Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu if they make their way over to the South Bay.
That’s thanks to a mural in Gardena that captures the figure skater in all her Olympic glory. Liu took home gold for her free skate during the 2026 Winter Olympics, becoming the first American woman to win an individual figure skating Olympic medal in two decades.
The mural is on the side of a building located at the corner of Crenshaw Boulevard and 156th Street. It depicts Liu’s performance during the women’s figure skating event in February, centered by a smiling Liu biting down on her medal.
Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu is seen depicted on a mural in Gardena on March 1, 2026.
The mural has caught Instagram users’ attention thanks to artist Gustavo Zermeño Jr., who posted on his account a video of the mural’s progress on Feb. 24. More than 171,000 users liked the post, which was captioned, “Had to give @alysaxliu her flowers.”
“After seeing @alysaxliu win gold and hearing her amazing story I felt inspired to paint this piece… it’s so dope to see good genuine people win, she deserves all the flowers,” Zermeño Jr. said in another post about the mural in March.

Zermeño Jr. did not respond to the USA TODAY Network’s interview request. However, in a clip from NBC Los Angeles, he said he thought Liu’s “personality really captivated the U.S.”
“I think ultimately, I wanted to paint something that not only inspired myself but obviously inspired the U.S., but inspires the youth,” Zermeño Jr. said.
He noted that while Liu is from the San Francisco Bay Area, she does have ties to the Los Angeles area because she’s a student at UCLA.
People can view the mural at 15532 Crenshaw Blvd., Gardena.
