On August 19, reports emerged that Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet would be moving back to the U.K. in a surprising reversal.
Harry and Meghan left Harry’s home country in 2020 for the U.S., resigning as working royals in the process.
On Wednesday, Harry was seen beaming at an event in Washington, D.C., complete with a U.K.-themed Easter egg.
Following the shocking bombshell that he and Meghan Markle would soon be moving back to the U.K. along with their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, Prince Harry was all smiles at his first appearance post-announcement.
On August 19—the same day the Sussex news was announced—Harry participated in a roundtable event for veterans in Washington, D.C. In photos obtained by Page Six, the Duke of Sussex is seen beaming as he greeted guests and spoke at the podium, “which notably had a little Union Jack, the U.K. national flag, in front of the mic,” the outlet reported.

On Wednesday, news broke that the Sussex family of four would be returning to the U.K. imminently, in time for Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, to start school in September. This marked a reversal from Harry and Meghan’s 2020 decision to step back as working royals and relocate to the U.S.—California, specifically—where Meghan hails from.
The Sussexes are headed back to Harry’s home country for an “extended period,” with Page Six noting that “The palace was made aware of the move.” King Charles, Harry’s father, was reportedly notified of Harry and Meghan’s decision on August 16, with a source telling the publication, “I know that Charles is the reason they are moving back.”

A source added that the king “looks forward” to spending more time with the Sussexes, while noting that Harry and Meghan will remain “non-working members” of the royal family. The couple will also move into a “non-royal residence” and “continue with their business enterprises,” according to The Sun.
Hello! reported that Harry and Meghan will retain their current home in Montecito, California, as well as a vacation home in Portugal. The Sussex family of four were last in the U.K. in July, when they met with Charles and Queen Camilla at the king’s country home, Highgrove House. It was the first time that Meghan, Archie, and Lilibet had returned to the U.K. in four years, since 2022. The Times reported after the meetup that Harry left feeling “buoyed, very happy, and really energized.”

A source told People that, while Harry has spent the last six years building a life for himself and his family in Montecito, California, he has “always had one foot” in the U.K. “He’s never lived a life here [in California] where he hasn’t been entangled in his past life,” the insider said.
