After Kate Middleton’s cancer diagnosis in 2024, her husband Prince William turned to her mother, Carole Middleton, “when everything was falling apart.”

Royal biographer Robert Jobson added that Carole was “solid as a rock” for her son-in-law.

“She’s been a good sounding board, a wise head,” he continued.

After Kate Middleton’s shocking cancer diagnosis in 2024, royal biographer Robert Jobson said that there was one person who was there for Prince William “when everything was falling apart”—Carole Middleton, Kate’s mother.

Before Kate’s diagnosis, William and Carole were already close. After, they became as close as they’d ever been. The two would head out to a pub and “they would sit and talk,” Jobson told Hello!, which offered the Prince of Wales a break from the “brutal” season, as he put it later in 2024, after Kate had completed chemotherapy treatment that September.

Carole “was there to support William and was there all the time for the grandchildren,” Jobson continued. “She’s been as solid as a rock.”

“When everything was falling apart and he needed someone to talk to, she was the one,” he added, noting, “She’s been a good sounding board, a wise head.”

The close bond between William and his mother-in-law was on display at Royal Ascot in June 2024, as Kate’s cancer treatment continued. The Princess of Wales didn’t attend that year, but Carole and her husband Michael Middleton joined William in her absence. At one point, Carole’s heel got stuck in the grass, and William offered a helping hand to her as she steadied herself.

Carole “enjoys making the Prince of Wales his favorite snack of cheese on toast and stocks up on the sea salt chocolates that he likes,” The Daily Mailreported. In her 2022 book The Palace Papers, royal biographer Tina Brown spoke to an acquaintance of William’s, who said that in his early days of dating Kate, “Not only did he fall for her, but them,” referring to the close-knit Middleton family.

“A warm nest with a complete nuclear family and seemingly wonderfully uncomplicated,” the acquaintance continued.

“Carole and Michael are just as much family to William as they are to Catherine,” royal biographer Ingrid Seward said, per The Daily Mail. “He loves Carole being around to help, as she has been with the children from the beginning and it is easy and reassuring having her invaluable help—both with the children and keeping Catherine’s spirits up. She is a strong woman.”

Seward, who is also the editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine, added of Carole, “I think she will stay in the background and come forward when wanted, rather than pushing herself forward. I think she’s a very determined and clever lady. I have huge admiration for her—I think we all do.”

Jobson added that Carole “may not ever hold the title of Queen Mother, but in the future, she will be the queen’s mother. And she will be there to help her daughter and the family all the way.”

During Kate’s cancer treatment—from which the future queen announced in January 2025 that she is in remission—Carole “took over helping with the children and the school and the cooking and making food for William and looking after him, too,” Seward explained. “I think she’s a very strong and determined person.”

“Carole is a really helpful, practical, and unflappable mother and grandmother,” she continued. “Rather than ask what she can do, she just gets on with it—she’s very proactive. When William went back to royal duties after Catherine’s diagnosis, she was doing the school run and probably doing things like filling the freezer with the kids’ favorite foods. Looking after the three kids would have been absolutely no problem for her whatsoever, and Catherine would have been able to relax in the knowledge that her mother’s hand was on the wheel.”

As Queen Elizabeth’s former press secretary Ailsa Anderson told Hello!, “Carole has never put a foot wrong—she’s been a steadfast presence as a loving, supportive mother and grandmother to those grandchildren.”

Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis “are having a very similar childhood to the ones Catherine, Pippa, and James had,” royal biographer Simon Vigar recently said on Hello!’s “A Right Royal Podcast.”

“I was told by one of my sources that the late queen, very early on, identified what a good thing Catherine was, and how the absolute backbone was the Middletons,” he continued. “I think the Middleton family will have a huge impact on the future of the monarchy.”
