The episode included significant departures from George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood source material, altering key character outcomes

Warning: Spoilers ahead for House of the Dragon season 3!

At least four lives were claimed during the season 3 premiere of House of the Dragon.

The Game of Thronesprequel kicked off its third season on June 21 by chronicling the infamous Battle of the Gullet, a devastating clash that author George R.R. Martin once described as the deadliest naval battle in Westeros history. Its on-screen adaptation delivered on that promise, killing off four characters and a dragon as well as leaving one key figure's survival in question.

During the bloody fight, Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) falls into the sea and doesn't resurface before the episode's end. While the season 3 premiere left his fate unresolved, readers of Martin's Fire & Blood know the Sea Snake survives the Battle of the Gullet in the book. Sadly, the same can't be said for a few other characters.

Here's everything to know about which characters have died in House of the Dragon season 3, so far.

Ser Jason Lannister

The season 3 premiere confirmed the death of Jason Lannister (Jefferson Hall), whose demise remained faithful to Martin's source material.

Jason was killed off-screen and later appeared only as a severed head delivered to Daemon (Matt Smith) on the battlefield.

Sharako Lohar

Sharako Lohar (Abigail Thorn) survives the Battle of the Gullet in Martin's books, but not in the House of the Dragon. During the fight, she's killed by Alyn of Hull (Abubakar Salim), Lord Corlys' illegitimate son.

"Sharako is fighting until the end, and she goes down bitterly," Thorn told USA Today about the season 3 premiere. "There's a certain point in the fight that she realizes that she is going to die. And she is afraid."

The actress added, "When she's lifted out of the water, all the blood has washed from her face. In that final moment, she looks innocent, the soft light bouncing off the water ... [Salim] even said to me on the set, 'The audience is going to hate me.' And I said 'Yeah, I know.' "

Jace Velaryon

Though the death of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen's (Emma D'Arcy) son was arguably the most heartbreaking, it was at least expected. Like the on-screen adaptation, Jace Velaryon (Harry Collett) and his dragon, Vermax, die during the naval battle in Fire & Blood.

"I'm so happy with how it turned out," Collett told The Hollywood Reporter. "It's such a cool way to go. It's not just brushed under the carpet. It's very impactful, in such a great and epic episode. What a heroic death he gets to have. It's not just some boring death. I'm very happy with it."

"I think Jace's death is honestly a sort of unquantifiable loss," D'Arcy told PEOPLE ahead of the season 3 premiere, noting that the grief will allow the queen to act with more brutality.

The House of the Dragon star continued, "I think there's a clarity actually that comes with Jace's death, not least because again, this is a political family, and if you secure your legacy, you preserve the memory of those around you. And her name will be in a ledger somewhere along with her son."

Tyland Lannister

Like Lord Corlys, Tyland Lannister (Hall) went overboard, after he was pushed by his former ally Lohar. However, unlike the Sea Snake, Tyland is likely presumed dead as he was covered in heavy armor and fell into a shallow, rocky pass.

His fate in House of the Dragon was a far cry from his fate in Fire & Blood, where he rises through the ranks and ultimately becomes Hand of the King, per Men's Health. If Tyland really doesn't survive the Battle of the Gullet, it would mark another major departure from Martin's source material.
