Herbert completed 14 of 24 passes for 121 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception as the Chargers’ offense struggled once again, with the team falling to a 0-5 record this season.

After Herbert’s latest mishap, NFL legend Shannon Sharpe blamed Herbert’s new fiancĂ©e, Madison Beer, for the quarterback’s disastrous start to the season.

During Monday’s segment of the “Nightcap” podcast, Sharpe criticized Herbert for missing part of the Chargers’ voluntary offseason program to travel with Beer on her tour ahead of the 2026 season. Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh said at the time that he had given Herbert full permission to miss the voluntary workouts.

“I would love to see another QB take time off to go travel the country with their girlfriend like they allowed [Justin] Herbert to do,” Sharpe said.

He added, “They ain’t winning more than four-five games. He’s making multiple mistakes every damn game. 121 yards for a quarterback of that caliber? Why would you even wanna take off? You’ve heard all the great quarterbacks talk about the sacrifices that must be made in order to achieve a level of greatness.”

Sharpe continued, saying, “You need to have a partner that understands. She should have told him, ‘No, babe. I need you to stay here. I need you to focus on the main thing.’ We think that everybody wants to be great. Everybody don’t want to be great. Everybody says they want to be great until it comes time that you have to make sacrifices in order to be great. You need a special type of partner. You need somebody that understands. You need a Savannah James.”

Beer, who has three studio albums and is a two-time Grammy nominee, is a pop singer and songwriter and was first spotted with the Chargers quarterback in August 2025. The couple announced their engagement in July 2026.

The songwriter was not immune to irate fans’ criticism. Beer also drew criticism from some fans online amid the Chargers’ 0-5 start, with several blaming her for Herbert’s struggles

Since being selected No. 6 overall by the Chargers in the 2020 NFL Draft, Herbert has not won a playoff game (0-3) and has had five different offensive coordinators.

Last season, Greg Roman drew significant criticism for Herbert’s inconsistencies despite tallying 3,727 passing yards on 66.4% completion, 26 scores and 13 interceptions, adding 498 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Chargers appointed offensive guru Mike McDaniel in Roman’s place, but even the inventive coordinator has failed to bring out the best in Herbert, and the two-time Pro Bowler seems to be regressing.

Herbert has amassed 937 passing yards on 59.4% completion, 5 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions, adding 142 rushing yards for the Chargers this season, earning a PFN’s NFL QB Impact grade of 60.4 (No. 34 in the NFL).
