Connor Hellebuyck, the goaltending hero for Team USA, has confirmed the rumors that he has put in a trade request with the Winnipeg Jets.
From Commerce, Michigan, the 33-year-old has played his whole NHL career in Winnipeg, and on three occasions, he has been the victor of the Vestina Trophy. The award goes to the best goaltender in the league.
Last season, however, there was a decline for the Jets, and Wednesday, Winnipeg executive vice president and general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff stated that the organization was looking into offers from other teams for Hellebuyck's services. "Certainly, as an organization we're going to listen," said Cheveldayoff, per NHL.com. "Everyone saw (Hellebuyck's) press conference at the end of the year. He was passionate. Certainly, in our exit meetings we had some frank conversations as well, but again, what happens in those meetings certainly stays private."
When we got to Thursday, it was confirmed by Hellebuyck that he put in a request to be traded from the Jets.
"I have tried to handle the situation quietly and respectfully while giving the organization time to explore its options," said Hellebuyck in a statement that was shared by his agent, per NHL.com. "With training camp approaching, I felt it was important to publicly confirm my request. My position has not changed. I believe moving on is the best path forward for me and my family."
