Victoria Beckham is shedding some light on how she kept her early romance with husband David Beckham private.
The 52-year-old fashion designer and beauty mogul began dating the soccer star at the height of her Spice Girls fame, so the pair were keen to keep their romance out of the spotlight.
While discussing singer Olivia Rodrigo‘s recent comments about struggling with commentary on her relationships on the Tuesday, Oct. 13, episode of Today with Jenna & Sheinelle, Victoria noted, “I really can relate. I can totally relate. That’s how it was when I first met David, and we were really young, but the advice that we were given was to just try and keep things under wraps.”

So how did two of Britain’s biggest stars manage to keep their romance out of the press for a while?
“We had quite a few first dates in car parks,” she shared, before laughing and adding, “not as seedy as it sounds.”
She added, “My mom would drop me off, and I would get in David’s car, and we would spend hours just talking, just getting to know each other privately before anybody knew that we were dating.”

The former Posh Spice, who now shares kids Brooklyn, 27, Romeo, 24, Cruz, 21, and Harper, 15, with David, said that their discretion was less about worrying the relationship wouldn’t work out and more about having some time “just to get to know him and talk.”
“We used to spend hours talking, just getting to know each other,” she said. “We were really under the spotlight.”

As for Rodrigo, Victoria said, “I do sympathize with her. She needs to find a really good car park.”
The couple first met at a Manchester United match in 1997. They announced their engagement in early 1998 and tied the knot on July 4, 1999.
These days, the power couple has been married for 27 years and has built a successful life together. One of her unexpected wifely duties even involves David’s backside.
“My husband has always had a great butt, but I am very happy to take the responsibility, work out with him in the gym, make sure he’s doing those squats for everyone out there,” she teased when the talk show began to discuss the topic of “glutemaxxing.”

And there’s one fashion faux pas the retired athlete better not attempt if he were to stay in his chic wife’s good graces.
“My biggest ick is a trainer sock,” she admitted. “You know, one of those little socks that you can wear so it looks like you’re not wearing a sock. If David was to wear a trainer sock, you just can’t not see that once you see it, you know what I mean?”
