Walmart surged 3% after Deutsche Bank upgraded WMT to Buy, citing inflation-driven pricing power and accelerating food market share gains.
TGT and COST each gained just 1% while XRT slipped 0.5%, signaling investors are rotating into Walmart as a defensive haven, not buying retail broadly.

In morning trading, Walmart (NASDAQ:WMT) stock is up 3% to $119.39 after Deutsche Bank upgraded the retailer to Buy and lifted its price target. The gain looks like a defensive bid rather than a broad retail rally. That climb is happening even as both the large-cap benchmark and the retail sector fund trade lower.
For a read on large-cap stocks, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) is down 0.3% to $767.54. On the sector side, the SPDR S&P Retail ETF (NYSEARCA:XRT) is slipping 0.5% to $84.27. Its holdings are modified equal weighted, so no single stock holds back the fund, and its move reflects how retail is trading as a whole.
Meanwhile, Target (NYSE:TGT) stock is up 1% to $156.87, a smaller advance than Walmart's. Additionally, Costco Wholesale (NASDAQ:COST) shares are up 1% to $993.75, matching Target's gain. Both trail Walmart stock, and gains across all three while the retail fund falls support that defensive read.
Deutsche Bank Upgrade Leans on Pricing Power

WMT Analyst Ratings — 24/7 Wall St.
Analyst Krisztina Katai's case rests on two points: pricing tailwinds are building, and market share is accelerating. She sees the current inflationary environment strengthening Walmart's value proposition and supporting faster share gains as shoppers hunt for lower prices. Katai also argues investors are starting to look beyond headline pressure on Walmart's U.S. comparable sales and toward the share story underneath.

The upgrade followed investor meetings in New York with Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey. It centered on some of Walmart's strongest food market share gains in recent years, alongside momentum in e-commerce, marketplace, advertising and membership. Grocery leadership is feeding faster-growing digital businesses.
Why Walmart Gets More Lift Than Costco and Target
Walmart's scale lets it hold price on food. That category brings shoppers back most often, while marketplace, advertising and membership layer higher-margin revenue on top of that grocery traffic. Costco draws much of its profit from membership fees, and Target's larger discretionary mix ties it more closely to spending on nonessentials. A value-and-share argument therefore reaches Walmart more directly.
Gains of 1% in Target and Costco shares trail the 3% climb in Walmart stock by a wide margin, a gap that looks even sharper against the large-cap benchmark's decline. The SPDR S&P Retail ETF's slide matters, because a genuine sector rally would lift it. With the broad market also slipping, the climb in Walmart stock fits a rotation toward perceived safety, where steady grocery demand tends to draw buyers.
Food Share Gains Face Their Next Test
Katai's bull case is that inflation broadens Walmart's price advantage and pulls share toward it, and that plays out over several quarters, where steady conversion of grocery traffic into richer-margin marketplace, advertising and membership revenue would give the argument more weight.
The bear case is that Walmart stock, already bid up as a haven, has less room to run if the rotation reverses. The test is whether Walmart's food share gains hold once the pricing environment eases, and whether the SPDR S&P Retail ETF turns higher, which would change the defensive read. Until then, investors may want to keep their positions sized for that risk.
