The Way Home has taken its final dip in the magical pond.

The time-traveling Hallmark Channel series starring Andie MacDowell, Chyler Leigh, Sadie Laflamme-Snow and Evan Williams came to an end on June 21. After four seasons, the dramatic series finale followed the members of the Landry family taking one last leap into the mystical pool's waters.

In November 2025, PEOPLE exclusively revealed that The Way Home would be coming to an end with the fourth season.

"It's been the best four years, well, six years really, from the start of all this that we've shared together and with [producer] Marly Reed, and it will be very hard to let it go completely. I don't think we ever will," co-showrunner Alexandra Clarke told PEOPLE in June 2026.

So, why did The Way Home end? Here's what to know about the decision.

In November 2025, PEOPLE exclusively announced that the fourth season of The Way Home would be its last. However, Samantha DiPippo, SVP of programming at Hallmark Media, told fans that "the Landry family's journey comes to a satisfying close [and] viewers will get the answers they've waited for."

“Fans of The Way Home have enthusiastically watched and rewatched every episode since the first pond jump of season 1 as they've tried to piece together the brilliant puzzle Heather Conkie, Alexandra Clarke and Marly Reed expertly crafted,” DiPippo added. “We're grateful to our talented cast led by Andie, Chyler, Evan and Sadie, as well as our amazing writers and crew who have worked so hard on this show."

Co-showrunners Clarke and Heather Conkie wanted the series finale to provide "closure and answers," Conkie told Variety in June 2026.

However, from the beginning of the show, the two knew what the series' last scene be. The show ultimately ended with Kat (Leigh) and Alice (Laflamme-Snow) leaping into the pond one more time.

"We always loved the idea of seeing the two women who started it all hold hands and take a leap together, only this time we're just not allowed to go with them," Conkie told PEOPLE in June 2026. "That was what we always wanted for the end, that they're going to keep going and having adventures and meeting new people and reuniting with the ones they've already met and have come to love. We just don't get to go with them now."

What has the cast said about The Way Home series finale?

The stars of The Way Home were sad to say goodbye to the series. Leigh told PEOPLE in April 2026 that filming the finale was "bittersweet."

"I mean, we all have said it, if this could have gone on and on and on," she said. "But at the same time, what we accomplished, and the storytelling that we did, and the hearts that we healed, and the families that we were able to help bring back together makes every bit of it worth it."

MacDowell told TV Insider that it "was disappointing" when she learned season 4 would be the series' last, “but we all decided that we couldn't think about that, that our responsibility was to do a good job."

"That was what we needed to think about and creating the very, very best and giving our audience everything that they love about the show and even more, knowing that it was going to be the last season," the actress continued. "We just had to give it all. And that's what we did. We just buckled down and did our most beautiful work that we could possibly do."

What would have happened in The Way Home season 5?

In a series about time travel, there are still plenty of stories and different time periods to explore, even after four seasons. Conkie told Variety that she would have loved to dive deeper into the 1920s.

Meanwhile, there were two generations of the Landry family that fans never got to meet, and the mystery of Tessa remains unsolved.

"I think the questions that we leave unanswered, the questions that we raise in the finale, are fun ones," Clarke told PEOPLE in June 2026. "We're trying to encourage the fans to write the next chapter themselves. Imagine where Kat and Alice jump to. Imagine why Thomas knows the house is blue. Imagine what Nick meant by that last little piece of saying, 'Oh, I think you'll meet her one day.' Those are fun questions to leave dangling because we know everyone has theories."

Will there be a spinoff of The Way Home?

There are currently no official plans for a spinoff or continuation of The Way Home, but "really, a Landry never gives up hope," Clarke teased to Variety.

"We never say never. This is a family. We would all love to come back together again in whatever capacity. In the meantime, I feel very blessed that it isn't goodbye," Clarke told the outlet in June 2026 when discussing the series finale. "We have created a really lovely family, and as much as we miss working together, they're never gone."
